A FROZEN DISCOVERY
Cocoa was discovered by two paramedics in La Loche, Saskatchewan, on a night when temperatures plummeted to -46°C. The short-haired dog was spotted limping through the bitter cold, completely exposed. While she suffered from visible frostbite, the extent of her trauma went much deeper.
When no one came forward to claim her, the paramedics transported her across provincial lines to Edmonton, Alberta, ensuring she reached the safety of a dedicated rescue organization.
BEYOND THE SURFACE
Medical assessments soon revealed that Cocoa’s limp was caused by more than just the freezing temperatures; she was suffering from a fractured femur. The injury left her in significant pain, requiring immediate and intensive care.
Despite the trauma of her past and the agony of her injury, Cocoa remained exceptionally affectionate. Throughout her time in foster care, she constantly sought out human connection, proving that a resilient spirit can survive even the harshest conditions.
COCOA’S TURNING POINT
To grant Cocoa a life free from chronic pain, her veterinary team determined that leg amputation was the only path to long-term comfort. This surgery was the final hurdle in her journey, and her resilience has deeply touched her foster family as they guide her through recovery. No longer a wanderer in the cold, Cocoa has traded her painful past for the safety of a caring home.
Her survival is a testament that, even in the harshest conditions, timely care provides the warmth needed to truly heal.
