Food aid to dogs in Cuba

"We delivered 230kg of food aid"

At TagsforHope, we are deeply committed to making a difference in the lives of animals in need. Through the dedication of our incredible volunteers and partners, we have had the chance to take part in our first humanitarian mission to Cuba – bringing vital aid to local rescuers and offering second chances to vulnerable animals.

In winter 2024, our team successfully delivered 230 kg of food to Cuban animal shelters and facilitated the rescue of two dogs, safely bringing them to Canada to be adopted. Later that year, a second mission provided 160 kg of food aid and rescued two puppies, who are now on their way to loving homes.

But the situation for Cuba’s street dogs remains dire. Just after our second visit, four newborn puppies were abandoned on the shelter’s doorstep. A compassionate local volunteer, named Yeraldine, was already caring for 54 dogs and struggling to manage the growing number of abandoned animals overall. In response, we arranged to bring two of these puppies to Canada, and they’re now thriving in foster care.

Most stray animals in Cuba do not share this fate. With no government support for animal welfare, shelters are virtually nonexistent, and stray dogs and cats often face inhumane treatment, including poisoning. Despite these heartbreaking realities, a dedicated group of local rescuers continues to fight for these animals, relying on international aid to provide food, shelter, and medicine.

"These harsh realities have united some compassionate Cubans..."

Despite the overwhelming challenges, a group of compassionate Cuban rescuers has come together to protect and care for the country’s abandoned animals. With limited resources and no government support, these individuals rely almost entirely on external aid to continue their lifesaving work.

Currently, our volunteers do not operate under a registered nonprofit status, which significantly restricts their access to funding. But through the generosity of TagsforHope supporters like you, we have been able to provide food, shelter, and medical care to countless animals in need. Local workers, like Yeraldine, who have dedicated their lives to animal welfare have helped us make this possible!

Yeraldine’s story is one of resilience. A cancer survivor, she continues to care for dozens of animals. With recent donations, we were able to provide her with a new refrigerator to help store essential supplies.

For those looking to make a direct impact, dog adoptions and transport from Cuba can be arranged through these volunteers and TagsforHope. Additionally, purchasing dog and cat food is simple via Supermarket23, where supplies can be sent directly to rescuers like Yeraldine. Please contact TagsforHope directly for more information.

Together, we can bring hope to Cuba’s forgotten animals. Every act of kindness – whether it’s donations, adoption, or simply word of mouth – makes a world of difference!
