She was one of those dogs that we just weren’t certain was going to pull through. And luckily, she has.
When the Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation team arrived in Sheep Springs, New Mexico, for their February clinic, they were prepared for long days filled with cases and animals in urgent need of help. But they soon found Kansas, a four-month-old puppy lying helpless on the side of the road, panting, her body weak, her soul hanging by a thread. She was sadly on the verge of death.
The entire team acted quickly. Kansas was immediately quarantined due to a strong suspicion that she had parvovirus, a deadly and highly contagious virus that spreads rapidly and kills thousands of young dogs each year. It was a race against time. She was rushed to the Rescue Ranch in Moab and then transferred to a local veterinarian for immediate intensive care.
She remained there for several days, had a feeding tube inserted, and received medications and intravenous fluids. Her condition was so critical that no one knew if Kansas would recover.
Her tiny body fought every day to stay alive. Still, she battled with all her might, and little by little, against all odds, she began to show signs of hope.
She plays with her pack, she’s eating well, and she’s expected to make a full recovery.
After a few days in veterinary care, Kansas was finally strong enough to leave the clinic. She was taken to a loving foster family, where a litter of parvovirus survivors was waiting for her. There, surrounded by new furry friends, Kansas finally began to shine again.
Now Kansas is full of life and joy. She plays with her pack, eats enthusiastically, and fills the room with her inexhaustible curiosity. Seeing her today, no one would imagine how close she came to losing her life too soon.
